The Joy of PocketWizards

•May 25, 2009 • 2 Comments

This is a question I get asked a lot, so I thought I would throw up a quick post…

Seeing as we live in this super-fluid market of the UAE we have the option to buy product locally or ship it from our favourite country and mail order supplier. In the case of PocketWizards (PW) if you bought them locally then they should be “CE” (read: European) based PocketWizards as that is the frequency range allowed by the authorities here. Ones bought and imported from the US  will be be marked FCC and operate a different frequency. In other words the two dont mix; so once you standardise on one “type” then you need to stick with that type. Japan is also different than the US and European…but lets leave that there.

This has implications for other kit you may buy. If you decide to buy a monobloc or generator with a PW-based wireless trigger in the UAE it will be “CE” based. Also if you buy a lightmeter here from Advanced Media or MK Trading (e.g. the Sekonic 758) it will also be CE based. So, in the same way, you can’t trigger these inbuilt European “CE” PWs with a US-based “FCC” PW.

So how do you know which country in the world sells, and uses, what frequency of PocketWizard?…well PW do have the answer and its tucked away here.

Strobists Meet 2nd May

•May 5, 2009 • 18 Comments

Hi All.

Sorry it took a while for the post/upload but if you know anything about RAID arrays its just taken 37hrs, after a minor disaster, for it to rebuild (but save) my 20k+ of pictures.

So if you click through to the slideshow you’ll see pictures from half of the photographers on the day – some images cropped to remove the odd lightstand leg but otherwise out-of-camera. My thanks to all that came down and especially Kara for being the patient but in-demand model (aka the only one.) We’ll try and get another session in before the end of May.

Keep well,

Mark

15th Dubai Strobist’s Meetup Capital D Studio

•April 22, 2009 • 12 Comments

I’ve booked Capital D Studio for our next meetup on Saturday 2 May, so if you’re around join in. The link to Capital D’s location map is here, if you dont know how to find it. As always models/friends/girlfriends/boyfriends or anyone you can drag along to model are most welcome. The Studio hire is 1,200 AED for the half day, which as always this is evenly divided by the number of attending photogs. This is a special deal which we get and please note that the offer of 1,500 AED plus gear being offered by GPP was only an introductory offer, i.e. a one off. The normal rate charged is 3,000 AED for a full day and 1,500 AED for a half day.

Hope to see you all soon, Nigel

The Valley of the Gels

•April 22, 2009 • 4 Comments

roscoMany of you have been asking me recently where you can buy gels in Dubai, so I have requested a quote from the local Rosco agent for some of the more common gels, i.e. the tungsten and fluorescent conversion gels. Unfortunately to obtain sheets of gel, the agent has to order from Europe and while the cost for a standard sheet 53cm x 1.22m, is relatively inexpensive at 22 Dirhams it soon becomes very uneconomically once shipment charges are added in. So if a bunch of you wish to order up several sheets, I’ll put in a bulk order and we can share the cost of shipment. Have a look at Rosco’s website to get a better idea of which gels you require and I’ll place an order. It’s a money up front kind of thing with the local agent, but that shouldn’t be much of an issue. I have also contacted the local agent for Lee gels but alas they don’t sell sheets only rolls 7.62 x 1.63 metres at 373 Dirhams, so I guess that’s a no brainer. Drop a comment below and I’ll collect money at our next meetup so as I can place an order.

Bfn, Nigel

A Kelbyesque Post and the “Brain”

•April 21, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Sorry all, been a bit distracted after GPP by that other hobby of mine that happens to take place 5 times a week and pays the bills. So I have some posts prepared that I will drop in across the week but thought I would start with some quick things…

  • Bowens LiteBook: If your not subscribing already, every month Bowens (a UK lighting supplier) produce an online magazine covering studio lighting and a useful section called “Hough-To” which gives lighting setups for you to try.
  • Last day (22nd) of Photoworld at Hall 3 of Dubai World Trade Centre. Open from 11am-8pm. All your friendly equipment resellers there (Advance Media, MK Trading, National Stores, Grand Stores…)
  • As many of you know I work for HP and we are holding an event on the 20th May with Magnum Photographers. Details of the event are here, your invited and you just have to register!
  • Watch the below for a bit of inspiration for anybody who has an obsession (aka most photogs)

The Brain: This evening I bumped into Jim and we got talking about where we buy kit and he suggested that we had a list of all the places we found kit in the UAE. I’ve had the same conversation with pretty much all of you since we started the DubaiStrobists…so lets get it going. My aim is to build a comprehensive list of all the little things that we all know – some of us know where to get official camera gear, some know of DIY kit, some studios, props…whatever!

I’ll send a small spreadsheet to the distribution list which simply asks for the manufacturer, product, store and location/contact of each item that you know about. I didn’t include pricing as it will a pain to track and update. As I start to get replies I will compile them into a single file and post a version to the blog.

Results from the 14th Dubai Strobist’s Meetup

•April 16, 2009 • 4 Comments

Hi all, as most of us seem to be suffering from limited access to Flickr, Mark and I have sat down and made a selection of some of the better shots from those that attended our last meetup on 11 April. Unfortunately we didn’t get everyones photos, so in future if you want your pics to show up on the blog, please pass them on either at the meetups, or forward to us shortly thereafter. Here’s the link to the photo gallery – enjoy.

It was great to see a few new faces, obviously inspired by the workshops attended at GPP and hopefully you all managed to get something out of the meetup. A big thanks to all the models who attended and if you haven’t already passed on your photos, please do so that we provide them with some of your better quality images.

See You all Soon, bfn Nigel

Just a quick post to let you all know that I’ve booked Capital D Studio in Al Quoz for a meetup on Saturday 11 April, from 2 p.m. If you’re around and wish to attend, drop a quick comment below so that I can get a feel for the numbers.

I trust that all that attended GPP had a great time and managed to pick up a few tips and are now itching to try out a few new things.

If you haven’t been to one of the meetups at the studio, here’s a link to their website and directions to the studio.
